NIWeek: Tablet-based augmented reality helps predictive maintenance for pumps

Sensors on critical pumps can feed a system to help technicians or operators identify when failures are pending and improve energy efficiency. A major U.S. refinery will host a pilot pump diagnostic project, similar to an NIWeek 2016 stage demonstration held on Aug. 2. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) demo highlighted collaboration among Flowserve, PTC ThingWorx, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and National Instruments. It builds on a 2016 NIWeek augmented reality demo using a highly instrumented mountain bike.

Automotive Aluminum Recycling Rate Higher Than 90 percent, New Study Confirms

New research from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling confirms an overall recycling rate of 91 percent for automotive aluminum. The peer-reviewed study, funded by the Aluminum Association, examines how much aluminum used in the United States' light-duty automotive sector is recovered and recycled from vehicles at end of life. This new study supports findings from earlier third-party government and auto industry reports to confirm aluminum is the most sustainable choice for the environment.

Hyperloop One opens its first manufacturing plant

Engineers are beginning to construct the components of DevLoop ready for 2017.

Hardening up: New alloy four times as tough as titanium

A chance discovery in a physics lab at Rice University has turned up an ultra-hard material that could usurp the titanium commonly used in today's knee and hip replacements. Scientists have found that by melting gold into the titanium mix they can produce a non-toxic metal that is four times harder than titanium itself, raising the prospect of more durable, longer lasting medical implants.

Humans and robots working in harmony at Ford Cologne factory

Used in the right way, robots they have the potential to make life much easier for humans on a production line, but most factory robots don't have the ability to stop or subtly adjust their motion, so anyone who gets in the way is at risk of injury. Ford thinks it's found a way around this problem, and is putting humans side-by-side with robots in its Cologne factory to validate its approach.

Mercedes-Benz harnesses 3D printing for on-demand spare parts

While companies like Local Motors are dabbling with the idea of a fully 3D-printed car, bigger manufacturers are embracing the technology on a smaller scale. Mercedes-Benz Trucks is harnessing the on-demand benefits of parts produced in this way, using an environmentally friendly 3D printing process to create spare parts.
